My favourite aspect of the relationship between Javert and Valjean is how similar roots have given rise to two such contrasting characters. Reading into it, I realised that actually, their positions would have been almost polar opposites before Valjean fell into poverty and stole A LOAF OF BREAD (the bastard! D< DA LAWR IS NUT MOCKED!).

So. Young Jean Valjean encounters the child who will one day be Inspector Javert. He gives him bread. What do you mean dramatic irony?
